03.09.06 (8:28 am) [edit]
Rolex is planning on introducing the 'Green GMT' in 2006. Main difference between the current GMT and the Green GMT will be the use of the Maxi dial, Maxi hands and the word Rolex painted around the dial surround. Just like the Green Submariner, we're expecting a huge demand for the new GMTs.

Rolex Or Replica?
03.09.06 (8:14 am) [edit]
Rolex or Replica??
Many people are buying and selling Rolex and other fine timepieces over the internet.
Most are honest people representing their product correctly. However, some are either
intentionally or unintentionally representing their watches as something they are not.
Having a resource to clarify this information can mean the difference between making a wise
investment in a quality timepiece, and overpaying for something that was misrepresented.
(PLEASE NOTE: The Replicas, Fakes, Copies, Knock-Offs, and Counterfeits
identified on this page are not meant to represent ALL counterfeit Rolex watches
in circulation, but merely an example of some of the counterfeits you may encounter.)
For a more detailed resource on identifying
Counterfeit & Authentic Rolex Watches... CLICK HERE.
Clear Casebacks...
Counterfeit Rolex Yacht-Master with "clear casebacks".
CLEAR CASEBACKS... Probably one of the easiest ways to identify a fake Rolex is by the caseback. Counterfeiters will often use a clear display, or "skeleton" caseback, thus allowing you to view the inner workings of the watch. The problem is Rolex does not make such a watch, therefore, these models are easily identified as counterfeit. (Please Note: There are only 2 "known" examples of Rolex watches with glass "exhibition backs", and they are both vintage manual wind models from the 1930s, and they were not "production" models.)
Engraved Casebacks...
Counterfeit Rolex models with "engraved casebacks".
Left: Counterfeit Submariner with engraved hallmarks & logos.
Right: Counterfeit Daytona with engraved "Winner Rolex 24".
ENGRAVED CASEBACKS... In addition to the "clear casebacks" listed above, engraved casebacks are another easy way to identify counterfeit Rolex watches. Again, Rolex does not engrave the caseback with logos, hallmarks, or designs (as shown in the example above). Genuine Rolex models will have a "smooth" caseback, and are free of these engravings.
The rare exceptions to this are ladies' models (prior to the mid 1990's) which had "Original Rolex Design" or a similar variation thereof, engraved on the caseback in an arc fashion. Another exception is on the Sea-Dweller case backs which will have "ROLEX OYSTER ORIGINAL GAS ESCAPE VALVE" engraved around the outside of the caseback in an arc fashion.
Hologram Stickers...
Comparison of genuine and counterfiet "hologram stickers".
Left: Genuine Rolex hologram-encoded 3-dimensional sticker.
Right: Counterfeit fabricated hologram sticker.
HOLOGRAM STICKERS... Genuine Rolex models are shipped new from the factory with a Hologram-encoded (3-dimensional) sticker on the caseback. This sticker features the trademarked Rolex "crown" positioned above the watch's case reference number. The hologram can be easily identified by viewing it from different angles, thus causing the background pattern to change.
However, "most" counterfeit stickers are not holograms at all, but rather simply a repetitious "Rolex" pattern which does not change in appearance when viewed from different angles. It is worth mentioning that the genuine Rolex hologram stickers did not feature the "crown logo" as a part of the hologram until (around) 2002, when the sticker was redesigned. At that time, the Reference number was also changed from gold lettering to black, as it is currently.
Date Magnification...
Comparison of a genuine and counterfiet "date magnification".
Left: Genuine Rolex Submariner with proper (2.5 times) date magnification.
Right: Counterfiet Rolex Submariner with much smaller date magnification.
DATE MAGNIFICATION... For authentic Rolexes, the crystal (on all current date models--excluding the Sea-Dweller) will have a glass bubble, or "cyclops" attached to the crystal, positioned over the date. Its purpose is to magnify the tiny aperture and does so at 2.5 times magnification.
However, on MOST counterfiet models the date magnification is more like 1.5 times, at best (as shown in the example above). This may not sound like much of a difference, but when looking at the dates side-by-side it's obvious. The date window should practically "fill up" the cyclops--the fakes don't even come close. It is worth mentioning that some counterfeits are now featuring a new larger font date wheel to give the "illusion" of being magnified at a full 2.5 times.
Triplock Crown Seals...
Comparison of a genuine and counterfeit "Triplock crown seal".
Left: Genuine Rolex Submariner Triplock crown with rubber o-ring seal.
Right: Counterfeit Rolex Submariner basic crown without seal.
TRIPLOCK CROWN SEAL... Rolex models featuring the Triplock crown (i.e. Submariner, Sea-Dweller and Daytona) utilize an extra seal within the threads of the winding crown's tube. This gasket resembles a black o-ring and can be visible when the winding crown is unscrewed fully. As shown in the example above, (most) counterfeit models will not feature this o-ring seal, but rather will have basic screw-down threads. It is worth mentioning that some new counterfeits will feature a "similar" looking rubber seal, but upon closer examination you will see that it is merely cosmetic, and is not functional.
As shown in the image below, the Triplock crown can be identified by 3 tiny dots positioned under the trademarked Rolex "crown" logo, which is engraved on the end on the winding crown.
Triplock Crown
Yacht-Master Hands...
Comparison of a genuine and counterfeit "Yacht-Master minute hand".
Left: Genuine Rolex Yacht-Master featuring oversized "minute" hand.
Right: Counterfeit Rolex Yacht-Master featuring standard sized "minute" hand.
YACHT-MASTER "MINUTE" HAND... Genuine Rolex Yacht-Master models feature a "minute" hand which is considerably thicker than those on other Rolex sports models. However, to save money, counterfeiters will often use the same hands found on the Submariner. This can be easily identified when viewed side-by-side (as shown in the example above).
Daytona Hands...
Comparison of genuine and counterfeit "Daytona hands".
Left: Genuine Rolex Daytona featuring full-sized "shaped" hands.
Right: Counterfeit Rolex Daytona featuring under-sized, "flat tip" hands.
DAYTONA HANDS... Counterfeiters will often use hands which are of the wrong size and/or shape. In the example shown above, the genuine Daytona features a "minute" hand which reaches all the way to the outer "hash" marks. However, the counterfeit model shown features much shorter hands. This is often the case because counterfeiters use whatever stock of parts they have available, which is usually whatever is the cheapest.
You will also note that the "shape" of the hands on the counterfeit is incorrect. modern Daytona models feature hands which are "rounded" on the tips. Again, counterfeiters will often use whatever hands they have available, and in this case they have used hands from a Day-Date model, which are flat on the tip.
Daytona Registers...
Comparison of genuine and counterfeit "Daytona registers".
Left: Genuine Daytona featuring properly marked and positioned registers.
Right: Counterfeit Daytona featuring smaller and incorrectly marked registers.
DAYTONA REGISTERS... Genuine Rolex Daytona models feature mini-registers on the dial which perform Chronograph "stop watch" functions (i.e. elapsed hours and minutes). It is also worth mentioning that the large "sweep" hand on the dial is also part of the stop watch function, and is not the primary second hand-- the second hand for the watch is the small 20/40/60 register.
However, counterfeit models will rarely perform these functions, but rather will be used for "day of week", "date", and "24-hour time". (Please Note: not all counterfeit models will be "printed" with these incorrect functions, but their operations will still be incorrect.)
Furthermore, the size and position of these mini registers will often be incorrect on counterfeits. As shown in the example above, the counterfeit model features much smaller registers which are positioned too far inward on the dial, while the genuine Daytona features registers which are positioned much farther outward--almost touching the 3-6-9 hour markers.
Crown Etching
Identification of the GENUINE "micro-etched crystal".
Above: A close-up view of the etching on a genuine Rolex Explorer.
Below (left): The etching as it appears on the crystal of a counterfeit Rolex Submariner.
HINT: It's just barely visible below the "SWISS MADE" on the dial.
Below (right): A close-up view of the same etching..
Fake Laser Etching Fake Laser Etching
You will notice that the fake etching is "similar" to that in the genuine example,
the biggest difference being that the "balls" on the tips of the fake are too small.
MICRO-ETCHED CRYSTAL... Brand new for 2002, Rolex has started micro-etching a tiny "coronet" (or crown) logo into the crystal, at the 6 o'clock position. This mark is quite small, so it is difficult to see with the naked eye. However, when viewed under a loupe, the faint outline can be distinguished, as seen in the examples above. (Please excuse the poor quality pics... the only thing more difficult than locating the etching is photographing it.)
(Please Note: Rolex has just started phasing-in this micro-etching process and, to date, not all models have the etching. It is believed that the etching should appear on most (if not all) new models produced by the end of 2003, or early 2004.)
Rolex Case Reference Numbers...
Identification of Rolex "case reference numbers"
Above: The engraving (between the lugs) of a GENUINE Rolex Submariner.
Below: The "acid etching" (between the lugs) of a FAKE Rolex Submariner.
Fake Serial Number
CASE REFERENCE NUMBERS... Probably the most accurate way to identify a genuine/counterfeit Rolex watch is by locating the Serial and Case Reference Numbers. These special identification numbers are engraved on the side of the case, located between the lugs (as shown in the example above).
As you can see in the examples above, the engraving between the lugs of a genuine Rolex feature very fine lines, which actually catch the light similar to that of a diamond cut edge. However, (some) counterfeits will feature a sandy (acid) etched appearance, as seen in the example above. Furthermore, the spacing on these numbers is often too close together. It is worth mentioning that counterfeiters frequently use the SAME numbers on their watches. Thus, the example shown above: "R863698" is seen quite often, and is a pretty good sign of a fake.
For a more detailed explanation of these numbers, their location, and what the numbers mean... click here.

Rolex Regatta Miami
03.04.06 (3:57 am) [edit]
Source: http://news.google.com/news/u...://www.bymnews.com/new/content/view/2564 6/48/&cid=0
Having kicked off the season with the Rolex Miami OCR Regatta in January, this August the Stars' sails will fill the Bay of Luebeck off Neustadt in Germany during Rolex Baltic Week (6th - 13th August).
"We are expecting around 85 boats from 20 nations, including all the top European teams," says Torben Knappe, Regatta Director from the organizing club, Norddeutscher Regatta Verein Hamburg (NRV). 'Spirit of the Stars' - is the motto in anticipation of the current World Champions, Xavier Rohart/Pascal Rambeau from France, the former world title-holders Ian Percy/Steve Mitchell from Great Britain and newcomer Mateusz Kusznierewicz from Poland, a double Olympic Champion in the Finn Dinghy.
A maximum of eight races will be sailed from 7th - 12th August under the direction of Christian Haake (Berlin/Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee), however the new Olympic format will not be adopted. "Our plan is to move to the new format this autumn after testing it at Kiel Week," explains Alexander Hagen, European vice-president of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA). For 51-year old Hagen, the European Championships will be the peak of the season, since these are his home waters where Luebeck-born Hagen first set sail 41 years ago. His initial dislike of the Star, which he once described as the "boat for the elderly", soon turned into a success story for the vintage motorbike enthusiast. Hagen has two World titles (1981 and 1997), three European Championship gold medals (1980, 1981, 1983) and two Olympic campaigns (1988 and 2004) under his belt. In 2005, the "veteran" once again proved his credentials by coming sixth at the European Championships.
Hagen targets a top 10 finish in August, a tough task given he has a new crew, medical student Sebastian Munk from Kiel, an experienced Finn Dinghy and Contender sailor. "We will sail our first regatta in April on Lake Alster near Hamburg," explains Hagen. They will manage to fit in a few training days in Denmark and use the Northern District Championships during the Travemuende Week (21st - 30th July) as a dress rehearsal for the Europeans. Asked about his plans for the Olympics 2008, he leaves everything open: "I have no idea yet, we'll see what happens."
Marc Pickel and Ingo Borkowski are less vague about their target. The Kiel-based boat builder and the lawyer from Babelsberg near Berlin definitely want to take part in the Olympic regatta in Qingdao, and they have no intention of leaving this to chance. Borkowski, part of Jochen Schümann's Silver Medal winning Soling crew at Sydney 2000, has secured a three-year leave of absence from his employer, the Brandenburg government. The financial side of their campaign is secured by the Willi Illbruck Racing Foundation. "Without this support, we couldn't go ahead," says family man Borkowski.
The pair only just missed the German Star berth at the 2004 Athens Olympics and is determined to succeed this time. The year has not started perfectly with a "somewhat bumpy" 29th place at the Rolex Miami OCR Regatta, confesses Borkowski, "but any other outcome would have really surprised us". The two last sat together in a Star in May 2004. "We have a lot of catching up to do," says the 34-year old, who does not see any problem in living quite some distance apart from his helmsman, Pickel. This year alone, they have scheduled up to 150 sailing days together. In between, they will work individually on their respective strength and stamina. In an effort to avoid missing any opportunity to face up against the world's elite, at the end of February, they returned to Florida for the Bacardi Cup (5th - 10th March). "The high peak of our season will be the Worlds in San Francisco in early October. It is then that we want to prove that we are worthy of world class sailing," says Borkowski. "The Europeans in the Bay of Luebeck (where he finished seventh in the Dragon at last year's Worlds during the Rolex Baltic Week with Marc Pickel and Thomas Müller) are a very important milestone for us."
The 2008 Olympics are also the target for Robert Stanjek (25) and his crew Frithjof Kleen (22). Like Pickel/Borkowski, the two Berlin-born sailors take a professional approach to their campaign, as they are part of the NRV Olympic Team. At the Rolex Miami OCR, though, the two youngsters finished a rather meagre 43rd. "We had to wait nine days for our boat to clear customs, then had to sail the first race with a chartered boat and spent half of the second night rigging our boat under floodlights. All this was reflected in the regatta results," reports Stanjek, who had switched to the Olympic keelboat at the end of 2004 from the Laser (German Champion 2003). He has never regretted his decision to do so. "I'm one of the younger guys in this class, and this is an advantage that gives me steadiness." Importantly, Stanjek and Kleen have found an experienced coach in Christian Rasmussen from Denmark. "He truly is a genius," raves Stanjek. They plan for 100 joint training days this year. "Our focus is to improve on our speed. We have been sail training off Majorca, Spain, where we will stay until Easter and enjoy the perfect conditions". The two sailing students - Stanjek is studying sports sciences at Humboldt University, Berlin and Kleen political sciences and philosophy in Rostock - have also headed across the pond for the Bacardi Cup. They will then gear up for the European Championships, "One of the two high points of our season, because we want to get into the A squad of the German Sailing Association", adds Stanjek.
Information on the Star Class:
The two-hand keelboat was designed in 1911 by the Americans Wilhelm Gardner and Francis Sweisguth. The first boats were rigged with a steep gaff parallel to the mast. The international class association is the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA). The Star boat is the longest-standing Olympic class (since 1932). More than 7,500 boats have been built of which around 2,000 are actively sailed. Worldwide, the class is divided into 21 districts, which are subdivided into fleets.
There are 23 fleets in Germany, with 149 boats registered. The F. Laeisz International German Championships (23rd to 28th May) on the Alster/Hamburg will be organized by the Luebeck and Hamburg fleets, which celebrate their 25th and 75th anniversary respectively.
Technical data:
Length-over-all: 6.922 m
Length at waterline: 4.72 m
Displacement: 671 kg
Draft: 1.02 m
Sail area: 27.92 m2
Mainsail: 20.5 m2
Mast length: 10.0 m
The Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) Hamburg will organize the third Rolex Baltic Week from August 6 to 13 in 2006. The event will encompass three different regattas - and once again it will take place on Luebeck Bay in Neustadt/Holstein on the Baltic Sea. This year's highlights will be the IMS Offshore World Championships and the Star Class European Championships. The Rolex Baltic Week 2006 will again feature the Swan Race, a regatta exclusively for Nautor's Swan yachts.

repair or service a Rolex watch
03.04.06 (3:55 am) [edit]
The best facility to repair or service a Rolex watch or bracelet (including vintage sometimes) are one of the three Rolex owned Service Centers. That is partially because Rolex does not sell parts to anyone now, so any other facility is using generic parts and generally has inferior quality service compared to the absolutely outstanding Rolex service centers. Cost for a Rolex service is about $375 which includes a one year complete warranty. Call first for instructions to any facility you choose: Manhattan - 212-758-7700, Dallas - 214-871-0500, or Beverly Hills - 310-271-6200. (There really are no other authorized Rolex service centers - although some unscrupulous watchmakers may claim otherwise).
To buy official Rolex dials, bracelet links etc. go to the nearest Authorized Rolex Sales Dealership located in your yellow pages. Be prepared for very steep prices, which by the way, is how we exist - by selling very, very similar products for much less. Be aware that local dealers sometimes offer watch services but do not send the watch to an official Rolex service center but farm it out to the local watchmaker - so for service it is best to go to Rolex directly.

oyster
02.22.06 (7:08 am) [edit]
The first true Oyster chronograph was the model 4500, which never sold in huge quantities as it was released during World War II. The 6232 and the 3668 models followed but proved just as unpopular. Both new models used the 13" Valjoux movement and had just a thirty minute register. While Rolex in 1942 had introduced an hour recorder it was a snap on back it would be another seven years before the Oyster case and the three button chronograph would be brought together in the form of the 5034. During the next fifteen years the 5034 changed into the 6034, which then became the 6234. This in turn became the 6238 and then finally evolved into the 6239.
Daytona
02.22.06 (6:56 am) [edit]
Rolex Daytona Cosmograph
Rolex was not among the chronograph pioneers, choosing to focus their energies on the Oyster and the Perpetual. However the success of these watches propelled Rolex to be in the position of being the "sportsman's" watch and sportsmen demand a chronograph.
Instead of developing their own movement Rolex chose to use the Valjoux movement. It was available in three sizes and they were all simple one button chronographs. These allowed the user to time one continuous event. This one button chronograph was popular but the more it was used the more obvious its limitations were. Customers demanded the ability to stop the watch intermittently which was of course impossible without resetting the time. It was not until the late 1930's that anything changed with the arrival of the two button chronograph. This was a major breakthrough and now allowed people to stop the watch to take necessary breaks and than restart it on the same time as when they left off. A football referee could stop the watch each time a ball went out an then get an accurate 45 minutes play.

high price
02.22.06 (6:51 am) [edit]
Like many high-priced, brand-name accessories, Rolex watches are often counterfeited and sold in markets around the world that cater to tourists. These fakes are mainly produced in China and Taiwan — and retail anywhere from $5 to an upwards of $1000 for replicas fabricated with solid gold. In July 2005, in Rome, it was possible to buy a replica Datejust for 20 Euros. By some accounts, over 75% of all fake watches produced annually are copies of Rolex designs. Even the self-winding mechanical design is often replicated using standard, high-quality swiss-made movements (most often those of ETA[1]), resulting in fakes that laymen will find difficult to distinguish from the originals.

Rolex has two watch lines, Oyster and Cellini. Among modern Rolex Oyster watches are the Air-King, Datejust, GMT Master/GMT II, Submariner, Sea-Dweller, Daytona Cosmograph, Day-Date, Oyster Perpetual and Yacht-Master. The bracelets for the Oyster line are Jubilee, Oyster and the President. Rolex dressy watches are the Cellini line.
the history of rolex
02.22.06 (6:49 am) [edit]
The Rolex, SA company was founded in 1905 by Mr. Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Mr. Alfred Davis. Contrary to popular belief, Hans Wilsdorf was neither Swiss, nor a watchmaker. Wilsdorf & Davis was the original name of what later became the Rolex Watch Company. They originally imported Hermann Aegler's Swiss movements to England and placed them in quality cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were then sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the dial. The earliest watches from the firm of Wilsdorf and Davis are usually marked "W&D" – inside the caseback only.
Hans Wilsdorf registered the trademark name "Rolex" in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland during 1908. The word was made up, but its origin is obscure. One story, which was never confirmed by Wilsdorf, is that the word "Rolex" came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning exquisite watch industry.
The Wilsdorf & Davis company moved out of Great Britain in 1912. Wilsdorf wanted his watches to be affordable, but taxes and export duties on the case metals (silver and gold) were driving costs up. From that time to the present, Rolex has been headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, though the company owns facilities in other cities (Bienne, etc) and continents (North America, Asia, Australia, etc).
The company name Rolex was officially registered on 15 November 1915. It is thought this change was part of a drive to popularize wristwatches, which at the time were still considered a novelty largely for women (pocket watches were more common). Wilsdorf was said to desire his watch brand's name to be easily pronouncable in any language. The company name was offically changed to the Rolex Watch Company during 1919. It was later changed to Montres Rolex, SA and finally Rolex, SA.
